Derailed is an [[wikipedia:Instant_messaging|instant messaging]] [[wikipedia:Social_media|social platform]] catering as "Your space to talk."<ref>https://derailed.one/</ref> It is [[wikipedia:Open-source_software|open source]], and licensed under the [[wikipedia:GNU_Affero_General_Public_License|AGPL-3.0]] license<ref>https://github.com/derailedapp/derailed/blob/main/LICENSE</ref>.

Derailed lets users communicate via [[wikipedia:Text_messaging|text messaging]], files, and other media inside communities called "Guilds." These Guilds are hosted online via Derailed's Gateway and users connect to them through said Gateway using [[wikipedia:WebSocket|WebSockets]].

Derailed is currently under heavy development, yet planned to launch privately soon.

Derailed uses Python for the main parts of its API<ref>https://github.com/derailedapp/derailed/tree/main/backend</ref>, Elixir for its real-time Gateway<ref>https://github.com/derailedapp/derailed/tree/main/gateway</ref> where it also uses Rust for authorization<ref>https://github.com/derailedapp/derailed/tree/main/gateway/apps/auth/native/auth</ref>. Finally, Derailed uses TypeScript for its Website, App, and Mobile App, where it utilizes React, React Native, and Astro<ref>https://github.com/derailedapp/derailed/search?l=typescript</ref>.

Derailed has had many a controversy over its last year+ of development due to a mix of rapid iteration and rapid name & branding changes. As these have stopped in most cases (last name change was December, 17th, 2022<ref name=":0">https://github.com/H4ckerxx44/vincent-chatapp-name-history</ref>) it still surprises many people that Derailed has had over 40 name changes<ref name=":0" />.

The platform while being over a year old is still unstable and not fully featured<ref>https://github.com/derailedapp/derailed/issues</ref>. It is recommended you do not use it yet until these can be guaranteed.
